hey, i'm not complaining - i just think it helps explain your relative distaste for the third one. Still freakin' awesome anyways. _________________ "Yes kids, we lied to you about Santa, but trust us, Jesus is real"

I just started reading the Golden compass and I have to say so far so good. It's a quick read (I started yesterday on the train and I'm almost halfway through the first book already) then again on the train I have a lot of time.
I enjoy the characters and the difficulties that this child is having with discovering what is true and who is bad. I also like the Daemons. Most especially I like the fact that they only learn what their "master/host" learns, although they may pay more attention to some parts and learn different things from the same lessons in life.
What I don't know is if the Daemons voices can be heard by others or is the communications between Familiar and Master private? I am also only half successfully constructing who is who and where is where in this odd England these characters live in.
I would Recommend "The Dragon Bone Chair" part one of Memory, Sorrow and Thorn by Tad Williams for those who liked this book. The beginnings of these books have a similar feel. Youth living in peace in a wealthy estate but he is neither nobility nor caretaker and just plays around, then in the world around him sinister things are dragging him in and sooner or later he will discover his true destiny ... Tad has a wonderful description and this book is quite frightening at times. Tad is quite willing to kill off a few main characters just to keep you guessing in how happy/sad an ending this will all end up being.

The movie version comes out this week. Apparently they've taken out the religion part, but that doesn't explain how they're going to do the last book then? The first book wasnt' very religious at all, so maybe they figured once the first movie was a super smash hit, they'd have less to worry about. _________________ "Yes kids, we lied to you about Santa, but trust us, Jesus is real"

I read that as well. Having just finished the trilogy, I'm not sure how they'll do the third book and parts of the second. Phillip Pullman has said, "My books are about killing God." _________________ Why am I talking when there is Science to do on the people who are still alive? |

I saw an early screening of the movie last weekend. It was really wonderful, and the girl who played Lyra was spot-on perfect. They do change the order of things around to make the movie flow better, which for those of us really attached to the books was a little hard to take. The special effects, all the daemons and the armored bears are phenomenally done. The fight between the bear kings is freaking awesome.
I don't think they really took the issue of God out of the movie. The "authority" is still mentioned, the magisterium is pretty damn church-like, and "dust" is still talked about as if it has a relationship to "sin." Besides, the religious nut-jobs are still boycotting the movies, so why not go ahead and do them like they're supposed to be done?
I heard talk that they were trying to change the tone of the movie to reflect anti-authoritarianism instead of anti-religion. I don't know if that's really what they plan, but it'd be rather difficult to do in the last books what with all the angels floating around defying God. _________________ "Thank God we're really hot chicks with superpowers."
