I remember that TMNT game being all kinds of hard, not ninja gaiden hard, but still. I believe Joe might have leveled some 80's game rage at Krang's Technodrome.

That game was probably the hardest one I've ever actually beaten. The last few levels were pure punishment. Much turtle soup was made on my watch.

Didn't we play through TMNT, Dan? In the era of "save game == leaving NES on forever".

I remember Battletoads being harsher, though.

I got through TMNT. I don't think I ever got through Battletoads.

Hold up, are we talking about the 4-player TMNT arcade game, or the single-player NES game that switched between a top-down exterior and a side-scrolling interior? Whenever a rich kid invited me to his birthday party at Alladin's Castle, and we got unlimited credits on any game we wanted, I would make a bee-line for the TMNT game.

The NES game, on the other hand, I could never really get past the part where you had to disarm the underwater bombs and avoid the electro-death seaweed. I always thought that a turtle, mutant or otherwise, should have more responsive swimming controls.

The TMNT movies were certainly a whole other thing. Are they going to make more, now that the franchise is sold?

They're talking about the NES TMNT game, the one with the non-swimming turtles and instant electro-death that you mentioned. The arcade beat-em-up was awesome. The NES version of the beat-em-up was even half-way decent.

TMNT games keep trickling out, but none of them have been terribly good. There's an XBLA port of the original arcade game, and there was an HD remake of the arcade sequel (Turtles in Time).

Also....[grim voice]I played Battletoads.[/grim voice]. That is one ridiculously hard game. It pretty much sets the bar for "most difficult game ever" in my book, with Ghosts 'n Goblins coming in a close second. At one point, I could get to level 9 playing straight through the game. That was after months and months of playing the game to death. Unfortunately, the game has twelve levels. Twelve levels of untold pain.

Ah good old Battletoads. I both loved and loathed that game. I could get to the part where you were on the crazy suction-wheel thing racing up and down the wall. My favorite were the first two levels though.

As for TMNT I was so happy when they finally came up with the arcade game for the NES. I think Michael and I played that game for the first time in Reno. Our parents gave us a hole bag full of quarters and went off gambling. We beat TMNT twice!!

I think "Snake Rattle & Roll" was the hardest game I played back in the day.

Hah! You have confused Street Fighter: The Movie with Mortal Kombat. That being said, I thought the MK movie was kind of awesome in its screwy way. I haven't seen the Street Fighter movie, but I've watched a few scenes with Raul Julia chewing scenery as M. Bison that made me laugh pretty hard.

I have seen the Street Fighter movie. Don't.
