Personally I think netbooks are far superior.

My paper has no INTARWEBS. It is, however, much superior to a netbook for doodling.

It's a $500-$800 iphone that doesn't fit in my pocket...

Or it's a netbook without a keyboard. I have to say, I love the physical keyboard on my Droid, I don't know how easy word-processing and spreadsheets would be on an iPad, those are what I would use a netbook for instead of my phone.

I'm sure the Apple fanboys will eat it up, and then complain to high heaven when nobody else buys it and Apple reduces the price by $200.

When I saw the tagline "unbelievable price" on the front page, I thought maybe it was ridiculously cheap, dropped from what I expect ($299) to $99. That wouldn't be believable. But I guess the insanely high price isn't believable either.

More charitably, I think it is a solution in search of a problem, instead of the other way around. I'm perfectly content to let it sit for a few years, and see what develops.

There is already speculation about future developments:

Steve Jobs apparently hates buttons. So a computer w/o buttons is something he has been trying to develop for quite a while. 64GB of memory however means it's just a paperweight iPhone. Put a stylus, 500GB of storage, and handwriting recognition and they would have something. This is just an expensive toy. Also resolution is 132ppi so it's not all that yet.

64GB of memory is huge!

(I know you meant storage space, yes, but I did get a chuckle out of the thought of a tablet PC having more memory than your average high-powered workstation.)

Scientist: I've been working on a thing. It's sort of like Stummies.
Don: Go on. I like what I hear so far.
Scientist: It's exactly like Stummies.
Don: And the twist is?
Scientist: It's a much bigger pill.
Don: I like it a lot. Is it ready for production?
Scientist: Yes sir, it's ready to go.

The thing I noticed pretty quickly is that this kind of device can't be propped up on a table to avoid having to hold it up all the time.

Repurpose a display stand or something.
