There was a conjunction of outages this past Friday. First, our DSL went out around 8:30AM. Service was restored in a couple of hours.

Second, Floyd's Discount Router finally bit the dust. I had plenty of advance warning about the imminent hard drive failure, yet did nothing about it. I spent the past day or so cooking up the old web box as a router, and finally got the last of the DNS issues sorted this morning. Everything appears to be ship-shape once again.

One thing I was interested in finding out as part of this inevitable (if rushed) transition was how much of a power draw I was looking at for the router boxes. Via my trusty Kill a Watt, I found out that FDR pulled about 20 watts when it was idle, and 30 watts when it was busy. The new recycled router is on that wack Cyrix III processor, which appears to be barely faster than the Pentium 100 that was in my old laptop, and a 3600RPM hard drive. The new guy pulls 30 watts at idle, and 40 when it is working hard.

I should see if Adam still has his old P100 laptop in working order...

Playing with Kyle's volt/amp/watt meter I know my laptop idles at about 40 watts, but usually uses about 50 to 55 watts.

After having to recreate a NAT router from scratch some five or six times, I've finally checked my config files into a CVS repository. Woo! Near-instant recovery!

This is a test post. I've been screwing with the PHP install, and apparently phpBB was making good use of a bug that was fixed in PHP 5.0.5.

There will be a (hopefully) brief outage tomorrow while I install some new drives in the web box. We're low on space, and I'm tired of not having things RAID'd.

I guess I'll wait until then before I attempt to upload some pictures.

The pictures are also getting the new hotness. That's part of what motivated me to get the additional drives in there, we don't have enough room to import the current gallery.

Hm. The proxy seems to be an impediment. I think I'll try again from the office tomorrow.

Interesting. I haven't messed with the slideshow features yet, I'll give that a shot.

Both types of slideshows work from inside the firewall... I'll try it tomorrow from work.
