Would it be a travesty of justice if the forums got the hookup with Google's AdSense?

Well, my personal feelings aside, the thing about Google's AdSense is that you have to get approval from them first. They have a bunch of guys who look at applicant pages and see if they fit their characteristic criteria.

Google Adsense wrote:
In general, we do not accept personal pages, chat sites, or blogs into the AdSense program. However, if a site contains targeted, text-based content and/or provides a product or service, we may consider it for participation.

My impression is that Loungenet probably wouldn't get approval.

If spammers can buy a domain and go all ape with AdSense, I don't see why forums would be exempt, but you're probably right. Nuts.

I suppose it's just as well. It would be weird to adblock our own website.

Eh, free money's. I'd ad-block for that.

Except if you never download the ad, it never makes the impression and it doesn't count.

our auto racing site was approved pretty quickly. I think they shouldn't have a problem approving an active forum, they probably have a category just for that somewhere in google-land

In the adblock sense, that brings up the age-old debate about whether text-based ads should be targeted by adblock the same way that flashy graphic ads are. I'm of the opinion that they should not, but apparently the two camps get very heated over this.

My opinion is that folks can block what they want.

Indeed. I just tend to believe that text ads are markedly less obnoxious than dancing graphic ones. I'm even willing to tolerate moderate graphic ads, as long as they aren't dancing... or singing. Singing is strictly forbidden.

Oh, sure. I don't mind them nearly as much. I don't even notice them on K5.

I've been tempted to setup the iTunes affiliates program and link to songs. It seems like a good way to get free music. Free stuff is free.

Setup a vote, "yes", "no", "I don't care", and "I will hunt down Mike and Kyle to hurt them and take the server away from them even though I will soon be in jail for doing illegal things."

I'd personally not like having random ads or music advertised on the site. I'd actually mind less if google was used because it tends to be slightly relevant.

Like Kyle said, free stuff is free. I'm all for it.

Filterset.G plus Adblock Plus on Firefox means I've been getting zero ads. So do your worst, advertisers!
